The Ascension Episcopal School community is mourning the tragic passing of senior Martha Odom, who died during a shooting incident at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday. Her sudden death has left classmates, teachers, and families in deep grief as they come to terms with the loss of a young life full of promise.
According to school officials, two other students were injured in the incident and are currently receiving care and recovering, while two additional students who were present were not physically harmed. The school has confirmed that support services are being provided to help students and staff cope with the emotional impact of the event.
Martha is being remembered as a bright, joyful, and compassionate student whose presence left a lasting impression on everyone around her. Teachers and classmates describe her as someone who brought warmth, kindness, and positivity into the school environment, making her deeply cherished within the Ascension Episcopal School community.
Head of School Sarah Davenport shared that the school is “walking through this moment together,” emphasizing unity, faith, and collective support for grieving students, families, and staff. She noted the importance of standing together as a community during such a painful time.
In response to the tragedy, the school has made counseling and pastoral care services available for students and staff affected by the incident. As a faith-based institution, the community has also drawn comfort from scripture, including Psalm 34:18, which reminds the brokenhearted that they are not alone in their grief.
