Suspect in Drug Investigation Dies in Officer-Involved Shooting: Firearm Recovered During Narcotics Operation – Las Cruces, NM

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 45-year-old man identified as a suspect in a drug investigation is dead following an officer-involved shooting on Friday afternoon, April 24, in Las Cruces, police said.

The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. during what Las Cruces Police described as an ongoing narcotics investigation.

The suspect was later located in the 2300 block of Lohman Avenue, near a McDonald’s, where officers attempted to make contact.

According to police, shots were fired during that interaction. The suspect, a 45-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered from his possession.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation. Additional details have not yet been released, but officials plan to hold a news conference once witness interviews are completed and more facts are confirmed.

The area was temporarily closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

The Officer-Involved Incident Task Force—which includes members of New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State University Police—is handling the investigation. Findings will be presented to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
